The much-anticipated Met gala 2020 has been postponed indefinitely. This is perhaps the first Monday in May where stars aren't walking down the red carpet in their OTT outfits, and even though our social media is flooded with iconic looks from over the years, we can't help but wonder about the outfits that would have made it to this year's exhibition, About Time: Fashion and Duration. Who wore whom, who dressed whom, the catty BTS and, of course, the endless debates on the best and worst dressed! - these are the things we will miss.
But, the lack of a Met has inspired us to conjure an imaginary one - one that would originate here in India and feature the who's who of Bollwyood. And while we're hoping the powers that be are listening to us, until that does happen, here are the most flamboyant dresses ever spotted on Indian celebs, which are every bit Met-worthy! Let's have a look, shall we?
Deepika Padukone
The Gaurav Gupta number mau have been super OTT for the IIFA, but would totally make a strong case on the Met red carpet. If goth were ever a theme, her look from her wedding reception where a very Frida Kahlo-esque Deepika wore the floral-embroudered Sabyasachi lehenga would have taken home the trophy for the best dress. Also, have you notuced the actor's recent obsession with veils? Very Met - Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.
Priyanka Chopra
This gown by Gauri and Nainika definitely suited the last year's Met theme, Camp - Notes on Fashion. The quirky print and the bouffant are the perfect exemplars of the OTT kitsch glamour. Priyanka has always been ahead of her time, no? She wore this dress 6 years too early.
Sonam Kapoor
Nobody does OTT like Sonam Kapoor. This vintage era-inspired gown saree featuring dramatic sleeves by Abu Jani- Sandeep Khosla and the dress-jacket set by Anamika Khanna establishes ground rules on acing dramatic outfits. On a side note, they'd probably have to name the event Sonam: The Art of Dressing to make it apropos to her style!
Alia Bhatt
Alia threw us a curveball with this extravagant pouffy lavender gown by Monsoori, considering the majority of her looks are demure and minimal. Very camp-y, indeed!
Anushka Sharma
Don't both of these looks from Anushka Sharma scream the 2016 theme - Manus X Machina? Never the one to give in to trends and move away from her trademark simple, minimal style, she does deliver scene-stealing looks when she does step out of routine every so often. The form-fitting outfits from Dice Kayek and Swapnil Shinde are hard to get over and would have been great for Met.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
Feathers, anyone? The queen of red carpets, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, shows us how it's done with this black Malan Breton gown with peek-a-boo net features and feathers, of course. They are hard to miss. She would be a contender for the best-dressed award alongside Deepika in a goth-themed Met.
Kareena Kapoor Khan
Giving us a yet-another Manus X Machina look, Kareena stuns in this robot-arm-inspired striking blue gown by Prabal Gurung. The thigh-high slit is going to be the death of us. So stunning!
Katrina Kaif
Capes are synonymous to Met. This look from Katrina Kaif, who stuns in this icy-silver cape-gown by Falguni and Shane Peacock, is very 2014 Charles James-appropriate, don't you think?
Diana Penty
Romantic pleats paved their way into our wardrobe (albeit in a trickle-down matter) post this one-shoulder Dolly J Studio gown. Diana Penty surely is more of an influencer when it comes to setting trends.
Sonakshi Sinha
This Sonakshi Sinha-approved silver sequin pant-saree by Anamika Khanna is dramatic, statement-making and everything that's a Met Gala-outfit pre-requisite. Manu X Machina - Indian leg, no?
Kriti Sanon
Channelling her inner Cinderella, Kriti Sanon looks stunning and would ace the Disney-princess themed Gala in this pastel blue gown by Mark Bumgarner, of course, if we even were to have such a theme. We mean, look how pretty!
Kangana Ranaut
Kangana Ranaut never shies away from making statements - sartorial or otherwise. This maroon body-accentuating gown with a detailed cape by Tony Ward makes her stand out, don't you agree?
Ananya Panday
Talk about drama! Ananya Panday may be new in the movie industry, but she surely nails the dressing game like a pro in this asymmetrical tulle gown with a lust-worthy volume by Galia Lahav.
Sara Ali Khan
If you ever need the inspiration to opt for abstract OTT floral prints, look no more. Your search ends here with this high-low printed gown by Gauri and Nainika, which Sara Ali Khan wears with much aplomb.
