Finding the most appropriate outfit for weddings was tough even when we weren’t spending hours at a stretch in nothing more than a pair of PJs and the most comfortable T-shirt we can possibly find. But now, with the big-fat-Indian-wedding reduced to merely a gathering of 50 of the bride and groom’s favourite people, this task feels extra difficult.
Is there a theme? What is the handful of others wearing? What if you’re overdressed?
The quandary only doubles in size when you have to attend an event with your partner. The question that looms - whether XS weddings still allow room for you to show off your sartorial alignment with your beau, so you can keep those #FashionGoals coming for your Insta-perfect posts.
Sure, we all missed the memo on “How to dress for weddings in a pandemic,” but after filtering pictures on a gazillion open tabs, we have culled the 6 most beautiful pictures of our favourite celebrities from the pre-Corona days which might just moonlight as the inspiration you need to ace lockdown wedding dressing, and how to be #CoupleGoals, too.
Shahid & Mira
Introverted and reticent regardless of the lockdown, this couple will definitely inspire you to rethink your stance on spending all this extra time with your partner, because for these two, it’s routine. As for going-out dressing, Mira’s lime green anarkali, courtesy of designer Punit Balana, and Shahid’s angrakaha-style kurta by Kunal Rawal, are stalwart choices which look equal parts festive and elegant. Throw on your favourite pair of kundan chandbalis like Mira here and you are good to go. For the men, wear your kurtas with some sneakers (we hear Roger Federer just dropped some cool kicks on the market) to give your traditional outfits a millennial feel.
Deepika & Ranveer
You may think this is not the couple to look toward if you’re seeking inspiration for simple wedding guest looks – well, on other days you won’t be wrong. Except for this time, the picture we’ve pulled off of the Internet is actually checking all our simplicity needs and will moonlight as inspiration just right. For one of their newly-wedded airport looks, Deepika wore this tasteful chikankari anarkali from designer Sabyasachi, and Ranveer switched up his M.O. and turned it down a notch with this super simple look. The bandi is a great way to elevate the overall feel of a simple kurta – and if you’re unafraid like Ranveer, we suggest you give eclectic floral prints a go!
Priyanka & Nick
Before 2020, when frequenting Nobu was still an option, Priyanka and Nick served us major date night-wardrobe inspiration in their cut-out/thigh-high slit dresses and skirts, and high-octane leather jacket looks. But we all know that the biracial couple are game even when it comes to wearing Indian looks. Of the many which they have sported over the years, the couple’s Roka ceremony look from 2018, is our favourite when it comes to doubling as a wedding guest look. Priyanka’s yellow chikankari kurta by Abu Jani & Sandeep Khosla is perfect to offset the dull weather and the fact that the embroidery is trending right now is just an added advantage! For men who want effortless style, you, too, can fall back on a fail-safe silk kurta like Nick. Wear your favourite mojdis or kolhapuris and you’re good to go.
Anushka & Virat
When it comes to nailing the art of minimal dressing, there is no couple we would look toward for inspiration than Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli. This look, which they wore to celebrate their first Diwali as a married couple, is perfect for those who like to make a statement while keeping it effortless. The plain saree from Sabyasachi is great if you want to go heavy on the accessorizing. You could opt for kundan chokers like Anushka or wear panchlada necklaces which are making a comeback. For men who like to experiment with their looks, Virat’s draped angrakha-style kurta is perfect to switch things up.
Sonam & Anand
One of the most stylish couples, (with a wardrobe and sneaker collection we would love to raid) Sonam & Anand serve some rather chic looks which can pose as inspiration for your couple look to weddings or otherwise. If you are someone who doesn’t like keeping things super simple but not extra either, then, Sonam’s chikankari lehenga and Anand’s sophisticated bandhgala strike the perfect balance. With just the right amount of glamour to spruce up a lockdown wedding, you can turn to this style to nail the art of dressing in-between.
Kareena & Saif
Although weddings in the lockdown have become a simple familial affair for most, there is a cohort that is undefeated by the pandemic and doesn't believe in dulling the spirit (more power to them!). If you are invited to a wedding like this, turn toward Kareena and Saif who are royal - both sartorially and by stature - for inspiration. The Anita Dongre lehenga is perfect for a low-key-yet-grand wedding, especially the bikini-inspired blouse which we are crushing on this season. Experiment with jewelry or go with just a kundan-studded maangtikka and let the outfit do the talking. The bandhgala sherwani as seen on Saif is a pretty elevated look for a groomsman, which will guarantee a great deal of attention. Extra points to you if you style your hair like him, too.
