Designer In Focus: Sari Style Talk With Anavila

Honouring traditional rich hertiage of India in the modern times, Anavila Mishra has celebrated the 21st century woman in every aspect. She uniquely combines aesthetic appeal, effortless elegance and around the clock comfort for everyday wear to linen saris. With a love for nature and a passion for handicrafts, her classic yet contemporary collections are a class apart. Celebrating her work of art by stepping inside her world of sustainable fashion.

1. What is your favorite part of your life as a designer?

Travelling and working with weavers & artisans is quite a journey of worthwhile lessons. When we sit together and work with them to create these collections, we learn each time and get inspired by each others ideas, from the mood board to the interpretation. Every part of the journey is an exchange of creative energies.

2. How would you describe your personal style?

My style is rooted, comfortable and organic. Everything else comes after that.

3. Your take on why linen saris are more favorable than the traditional sari?

I wouldn’t say that linen saris will replace it and take away the traditional charm. Many young girls prefer something that is lighter and easier to carry off and that’s where linen saris bridges the gap. Linen is causal and appropriate for daily wear, making it more wearable and comfortable for today’s modern woman. Traditional saris work better for formal occasions.

4. A memorable moment at fashion week?

When a designer sees their collection live on the runway, it doesn’t get any better than that. But if I had to pick a particular moment that I feel nostalgic about, it will have to be when my parents watched my show last season, for the very first time.

5. What do you think is going to be the next big trend for 2017?

India is becoming more confident in their approach to everyday style and fashion trends. I think comfort is something that is loved by all and will be a huge trend by itself. Style is worn best, when you are comfortable with your body and yourself. Easy going, relaxed and fuss free should be everyone’s go-to style.

6. Your ideal muse?

A person that is actually excited to wear a sari and makes it look absolutely effortless. The sari should be carried off in such a way that it is an extension of themselves.

7. Someone who has inspired you?

From the faculty at the Craft Council to the NIFT artisans, everyone that I work with has inspired me one way or the other. And most importantly the person who has deeply influenced me is my father, who is hardworking, focused and a leader in every way.

8. An act of meditation you find peace in?

For me, waking up to nature and watching it in movement is a meditation in itself. Pondering over the sea, spending time at Joggers park and watching birds fly is pure bliss.

9. A trend that has made a comeback in a big way?

Culottes and loose trousers have made a comeback like no other. Where fabrics are concerned, khadi and natural fabrics are trends that are loved by all.

10. If you weren’t a designer, what would you have been?

I would have definitely been a gardener or a florist. Simply because, I adore nature.
